Problem Solving for Better Hospitals

PSBHospitals is a movement to improve service quality, patient safety, and management efficiency in Indonesia, started in 2004 and included public as well as private hospitals.

The movement started as an experiment with students of the Graduate Program for Hospital Administration, University of Indonesia using the PSBHospitals approach as part of their 3 months internship at a number of hospitals in Jakarta and surroundings.

The results were above expectations because in 3 months the students were able to solve a variety of real live problems in these hospitals. Students got real live experiences to solve problems, and hospitals benefited because their long time problems were partly or totally solved.

Based on this experience the PSBHospitals approach was promoted to other hospitals in Indonesia. At present over 136 hospitals have implemented PSBHospitals. The  PSBHospitals approach is now also implemented in 3 hospitals in Vietnam dan 20 hospitals in Lesotho, Africa.

PSBHospitals Basic Philosophies

Basic philosophies used for implementing the PSBHospitals approach are:

Problem Solving should be simple, interesting, exciting, rewarding and fun
Individual experiencing problems should solve their own problem.
Only use new ideas to solve problems
Do not solve problems that cannot be solved
Problems should be real not made up
Start solving small problems so that larger problems can be solved more easily
Use available resources to solve problems
Sustain interventions of solved problems and replicate success to other units in the hospital
